Mission
The Food Security and Nutrition Analysis Unit- Somalia (FSNAU) seeks to provide evidence-based analysis of Somali food, nutrition and livelihood security to enable both short-term emergency responses and long- term strategic planning to promote food and livelihood security for Somali people.

HISTORY
History
In the wake of the collapse of the Somalia State and the ensuing food insecurity, FSAU has over the past eleven years provided researchers, decision makers, and project implementers with critical information on food, nutrition, and livelihood security.  FSAU began in 1994 with funding from USAID/OFDA and management by WFP, which was complimented by funding from the EC since 1995. Since 2000, the European Commission has provided core funding for the FSAU, with management by FAO. The FSAU Nutrition Component has received annual funding from USAID/OFDA since 2000. The Government of Norway provided bridging funds for the project between Phase IV and V (May 2006 to August 2006). Institutional Relationships
FSAU is a project funded by the European Commission and USAID (donors), and implemented by the UN FAO.  The FSAU receives technical support from a number of core technical partners and services a wide range of clients / users, including the international development community and Somali people.

ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE
Organizational Structure
The FSAU is composed of two separate, but highly integrated projects: the nutrition component and the food security component. FSAU is headquartered in Nairobi due to insecurity in Somalia with the intention of relocating in Somalia as the governing authorities are established.

The FSAU staff ranges from fifty five to sixty professionals in the fields of food security, nutrition,geographic information systems, database development,and administration. Two thirds of FSAU technical staff are in Somalia while the remaining travel frequently to Somalia. Consistent with the emphasis on capacity building three fourths of the staff are of Somali origin. The full time field presence of FSAU includes 23 Food Security Analysts and 13 Nutritionists. Field analysts are supported by professional researchers and nutritionists based in Nairobi,  who travel frequently throughout Somalia.

The FSAU has a Steering Committee that meets regularly to review project status and to provide strategic direction, and Technical Partners -- composed of UN, donor, and NGO agencies-that provide on-going technical support and collaboration.
