BASELINE ANALYSIS
FOOD & LIVELIHOOD SECURITY PROJECTIONS

Baseline Livelihood Analysis generates the reference understanding of livelihood assets and strategies of people, including description, quantities, trends and key issues. This basic understanding of livelihoods is the starting point and foundation from which FSNAU analyses food security and vulnerability (See FSNAU's Food Security and Livelihoods Analysis System).  FSNAU's unique contribution to Baseline Livelihood Analysis is the explicit definition, clarification, and refinement of livelihood assets and livelihood strategies as a defining framework for this analysis.

A Livelihood is simply how people live, where livelihoods comprise the capabilities, assets, activities and strategies required and pursued by households and individuals for a means of living.  Conceptually, FSNAU divides livelihood analysis into two key components, livelihood assets and livelihood strategies. ...more

This core analytical activity identifies specific populations and areas that are at an increased risk to food and livelihood insecurity as the direct result of an event or shock in order to provide early warning to decision makers for appropriate support and interventions.
The FSAU undertakes three types of food and livelihood security projections:
1.)    Annual - generated after the main rainy season (and updated following the minor rainy season) and projects food and livelihood security outcomes for the year by area and socio-economic group.
2.)    Ad Hoc- conducted when there is a sudden major shock or hazard which may lead to food and livelihood insecurity and for which decision makers require can use for planning immediate and medium term emergency responses, e.g. flood, hurricane, market ban, etc. ...more

MACRO & COMMUNITY MONITORING
FOOD SECURITY & NUTRITION ASSESSMENTS
Key Indicator Monitoring as a FSAU core analytical activity is divided into two components-Macro Indicator Monitoring and Local Indicator Monitoring. Macro Indicator Monitoring refers to the continuous data collection and analysis of key objective measures of international, regional, national, sub-national level processes that have a pronounced effect on people's food and livelihood security.  The term "macro" is a general term that is distinguished from a local (community-level or livelihood-level) monitoring in terms of the spatial scale of data collection and meaning.  Macro indicators include both single numbers representing Somalia as a whole (e.g. total population, total livestock exports), or a collection of key indicators from various places throughout Somalia....more

FSAU's Rapid Food Security and Nutrition Assessments is designed for situations where physical access to the population is limited or when the speed of the assessment is a major consideration (such as during an emergency).  Within the FSAU context, this approach focuses on nutritional and food security assessments which are completed within a period of 3-4 days and exclude the typical nutrition surveys normally conducted within a time frame of 10-14 days in Somalia....more

Technical reports with the analysis of the food security and nutrition situation in context, possible scenarios for the near future based on the magnitude of the shock and appropriate recommendations.
NUTRITION SURVEILLANCE & ASSESSMENTS
THEMATIC RESEARCH
FSAU utilizes both anthropometric and non-anthropometric data for integrated analysis, with no one source being used in isolation. All nutrition assessments are undertaken with partners.
Nutrition Surveillance:
Nutrition surveillance undertaken by FSAU and partners utilizes a diverse range of information sources on nutrition. These include detailed nutrition assessments, health facility information, rapid assessments, sentinel site surveillance and intervention data. Information on the wide range of factors affecting nutrition is also collected from partners in other sectors of health, food security, water and security. Most recently, methods and tools for the monitoring of dietary intake and coping strategies have been developed and are being tested during 2005....more
FSAU's Thematic Research is a new FSAU core analytical activity aimed at understanding the underlying and long term dynamics of livelihoods, food security and nutrition to enable appropriate programming and policy response. Thematic research promotes a profound understanding of cross cutting issues or issues that require detailed studies. The regular monitoring and assessments which FSAU carry out along with the thematic research complement each other in the FSAU Food Security Analysis System. Some of the topics that FSAU intends to analyze include the following:
.    linkages between food security and:  environment, conflict, nutrition, and macro economy
.    analysis of key food security trends in Somalia since the collapse of the state and identification of key strategies to promote food security in the future.
.    the statistical relationship between nutritional anthropometric data, dietary diversity, and coping strategies.
.    updating the livelihood baseline data with FSAU's analytical framework.
